Grant: Daddy, how come you don't have a shirt on?
Rick: Because I get too hot when I'm sleeping.
Grant: Oh! ..... Mom, how come you have the biggest boobs?
Elena:.... and then my sister puts worms and rocks and dirt in her soup...
Me: She does, huh? Well I think you're making that up.
Elena: Yes, I am!
We recently started watching the sweetest little baby girl a few days a week while her amazing mama is at work. Grace is an absolute joy to have and we all adore her. Her mama comes over during her lunch break to nurse Grace, so the kids have received quite the education- which I think is wonderful!
Elena: Mom, I need to feed my baby so I'm gonna give her my boob.
Me: Oh, ok.
Elena: 'Cause that's how Stephanie feeds Gracey.
Me: Yes she does. She has special mama's milk for her.
Grant: I'm gonna feed my baby from my boob too.
Me: Well, that's fine, but actually Daddy's can't make special milk like Mommy's do.
Grant: (scrunched up face) ... why not?...
Me: They just can't. God made mama's extra special to be able to feed their babies.
Grant: (under his breath) That's not very fair!

Healthy family by choice
You can't log on to Facebook right now (let alone talk to someone) without hearing how sick they or there family has been this season. I feel so blessed that we have, other than a quick 24 hour bug, been untouched by the sickies. I must say tho, I think it's because of some simple choices we make for our family. While I can't say any of these things individually are the cure all, I do feel that the combination is why we remain healthy. So take them for what they are- choices.
(Just a side note: Other than the first item on my list, the rest are not necessarily listed in any particular order of importance.)
Chiropractic: First, and foremost, we are all adjusted at least once a week by an amazing chiropractor. I have learned so much from Dr. Bryan and Dr. Stacy Wills about how the body works and the importance of keeping your nervous system healthy. I will be the first to admit that I was clueless about it all before I started working for them, but now I can't imagine ever going back to not being adjusted. We used to live a very "treat the symptoms" way of life before. Now if one of us has a "symptom", we go have the entire nervous system checked (and get adjusted if necessary) and let the body heal itself naturally.
No Sanitizing: We do NOT sanitize or disinfect anything. No antibacterial soaps, no bleach, no Lysol or Clorox wipes, and especially no hand sanitizer. (That stuff is terrible!) Sanitizing your house kills all the good, healthy bacteria that keeps us healthy. I use a vinegar and water solution to clean most everything in the house. It costs far less than store bought and it's safe for the kids and the environment.
Open the house: At least once a week, even on the coldest days, I open up the windows in the house for a good 10+ minutes. If it's above freezing out, I leave them open even longer. I turn down the heat and tell the kids to put on a sweater or wrap up in some blankets if they get cold. I feel that this helps to air out the house. It lets the good, fresh air in and the recycled, stale air out. And it's very invigorating!
Keep the house cool: People who don't come over often seem to always say, "It's chilly in here!" Yes! Yes it is! I keep the house cool for a number of reasons.... 1st- I'm almost always warm and so are 2 out of 3 of the kids. Little E tends to be chilly, but she wears socks and a sweater and is always moving, so she stays plenty warm. 2nd- I'm cheap! I don't want a crazy high gas bill if I can help it, so we keep the temp down and use extra blankets! 3rd- I think that a warm house harbors the "sickies"!
Probiotics, Supplements and Natural Food: I try to make sure everyone takes a probiotic, Omega-3 and a good fruit/veggies/multivitamin supplement. I am also in the process of trying to "de-package" our pantry. My ultimate goal is to not have any pre-packaged "food" in our house. For now tho- baby steps! I try hard not to keep cookies, chips, soda or any other empty-calorie, processed food in the house. This is not to say that I never give the kids a treat or fast-food, but I try my best to keep it limited.
My recent addition to our natural food endeavor is raw honey and a juicer. And I'm always experimenting with new recipes that involve real food and simple ingredients.
No Flu Shots: As you may or may not know, we are a vaccine-free family. I am more than happy to talk to anyone about how we came to that decision, but for now, I'm interested in sharing with you that the only "flu shots" we take contain fresh fruits and veggies!
Let them eat dirt: This statement makes me chuckle because I have a little guy that I watch who loves to eat dirt and sand and anything else that he shouldn't put in his mouth! I'm constantly telling him, "Spit it out!" With that said, I think it's important for kids to get dirty and yes, even eat a little dirt. I will readily admit that I struggle with letting my kids get dirty, but if I take a deep breath and remind myself that we have a bath tub, I can usually tolerate it! LOL! I think about last summer with our garden and letting the kids eat the veggies, dirt and all, straight from the ground. They loved it!
Fresh air and Sunshine: This obviously goes without much explanation. Obviously these super-cold winter months make that a bit tough, but we take it when we can get it!
Prayer: Last, but certainly not least, I pray for my family's health. I lift them up to the Lord when they are healthy and give praise and I lift them up when they are sick and ask for healing. Inevitably, everyone gets sick now and then, but sickness is a gift from God, as He created our amazing bodies to be smart and know how to use that illness to improve our immune system and make us stronger and healthier in the long run.
I pray that these words find you and your family healthy and thriving, and if not, I pray that you are soon on the mend.

Friday Funnies 1/4/13
Grant: Mommy can I have a sammich?
Me: No, you should have finished your dinner. I told you that you were going to be hungry later.
Grant: I know, but really want a sammich!
Me: No. You are done eating tonight. And besides, you just ate 2 cookies that you weren't supposed to get into.
Grant: (pause) Ok. Well, I will just have a sammich with turkey and cheese and mayonaise.
Me: UGH! This is not a restuarant!
Grant: I know it's not a restaurant.... but are you going to make my sammich now?
Grant: Daddy, go that way! I wanna show you the fire station!
Rick: Ok.
Grant: And maybe Fireman Sam will be there! If you hear woo-oo-woo... then he is there!
(This was one you might have had to be there for because the sound- or lack there of- is why this was especially hysterical to us. Most kids will try to imitate an actual siren sound, but not Grant- Mr. Literal, never changed his tone and simply stated- woo-oo-woo!)
Elena: (talking to Grant) ... and my other brother, he got killed...
Me: Sissy, that's not very nice. Please don't say killed. You don't have a brother who was killed.
Elena: But Mom, I do and he was killed.
Me: Elena! Enough, please don't say killed.
Elena: (to Grant) ... my other brother, who got... um... dead...
(UGH! Too smart for their own good!)

Elena's Week
We were at Sapora and they were offering a craft event. Elena was diligently working on a project...
Me: Maybe we should have your birthday party here.
Elena: Mmm-hmm. (pause) Or MAYBE, you could invite everybody over and when I walk in they will all yell, SURPRISE!... and I would be so happy! .... and then they would give me a bike!
I was scrolling thru Facebook on my phone and Elena spotted a photo of my dear friend, Vicki's baby...
Elena: Mom! Mom! Stop! Go back up!... Up!... More!... There!... Look at that baby Mom!
Me: Yes, isn't she pretty? Her name is Olive.
Elena: (gushing) Oh, she's lovely.... but I will call her Kara.
Elena: Mommy, why are you taking that medicine?
Me: Well.... this medicine is so Mommy doesn't have any more babies.
Elena: (very concerned) Oh Mommy... that's not very nice!

Me: Grant, are you hungry?
Grant: No.
Elena: Grant, are you hungry?
Grant: No.
Elena: He's not hungry Mom.
Me: Yes- I know. I just asked... and he answered me.
Elena: Well, he said he's not hungry. He's coloring.
Me: He's just like Picasso. I won't interrupt him again.
Elena: And he's just not hungry. I asked him.
Me: Whatcha making?
Grant: A present.
Me: Who is it for?
Grant: For Santa.
Me: Oh- that's very nice of you.
Grant: Yep. Santa doesn't ever get any presents and giving is what Christmas is all about! (this a line from a movie they have been watching over and over, but at least it's registering with him)
Me: Grant, you are Mommy's sweetest boy!
(I kissed him on the cheek, to which he immediately rubbed it off and glared at me as though I had just spit on him with my evil Mother venom! Oh boys! So sweet!)
Grant: Mommy, I needa go potty!
Me: Ok. Oh wait! Is Lucas still in the bathroom, honey?
Grant: (shouting at the bathroom door) Lucas, are you still in there honey?!?!?
Grant: When I grow up I want to be a fire fighter!
Elena: ... and when I grow up I'm gonna be a Great Big Mama Kitty!
Elena: Mom, where can I put this?
Me: Just hold on to it until we get home.
Elena: I'm just gonna put it on the floor.
Me: ugh! Elena, why do you even bother asking me the question if you aren't going to do what I tell you to?
Elena: 'cause it's still nice to ask!
Grant: Moooommmmy, I pooooped!
Me: Grant, how much longer am I going to have to wipe you?
Grant: Mommy, I'm not big like Daddy yet!
Me: So I have to wipe you until your as big as Daddy?!?!
Grant: Yeah!
Me: Great!
Grant: No.

Friday Funnies 11/16/2012
Me: Did I tell you Danny broke his ankle?
Brenna: Yea- I heard you and Steph talking... he fell in a ditch...
Grant: (interrupting and yelling) A DITCH? A DITCH? DITCH and WEEWAH? DITCH and WEEWAH?
(Brenna and I cracked up laughing because he got so excited and we weren't sure what he was talking about.)
Me: Grant, what are you saying?
Grant: DITCH and WEEWAH!
Brenna: Lilo and Stitch?
Grant: Duh!
(we definitely need to work on those S's and L's)
Early morning conversation with Elena- she was coloring and I was getting her a bowl of cereal:
Elena: Is it adorable?
Me: Adorable? Um, yes it is adorable.
(put cereal on the table)
Elena: Mom- this is a Diego bowl!
Me: What? Oh! Ha ha! A "Dora" bowl! Got it! I need more coffee!
Grant: (sticks his tongue out at me)
Me: What did I say about sticking your tongue out?!? Do it again... go ahead... stick it out and see what happens!
Grant: No!
Me: Go for it! Stick it out so I can grab it!
Grant: Mom don't tell me to do it! Are you trying to trick me?
Me: Grant, does Quinn have a marker?
Grant: No- it's just a knife.
(Don't worry, it was a little plastic play knife)
Brenna: Yea- I heard you and Steph talking... he fell in a ditch...

Friday Funnies 10/12/12
One-liners:
Grant: Quit making so much laundry for me!
Grant: Mom, only boys get to pee outside, right?
Grant: My fortune says I'm gonna go to Africa!
Elena: I can't find my baby Dora and I'm gonna have a meltdown!
Elena: I'm sorry Mom... and I forgive you!
Elena: Mom, read my fortune... does it say I'm gonna get some money?
The kids were talking to Rick on the phone while he is in Minnesota. Keep in mind Elena has an excellent imagination and powerful story-telling skills!
Elena: Dad, where are you?
Rick: I'm at my hotel.
Elena: Are you far, far away?
Rick: Yep- I'm in Minnesota about 8 hours away.
Elena: How did you get there if it's so far away?
Rick: I drove my car.
Elena: Hey Dad, my sister Alicia is there too and she's missing me cuz she's far away!
Rick: Oh-uh-ok!
Elena: Dad, I have a plan! (plans are her new thing) Do you know where to find my sister Alicia?
Rick: Um, no I don't.
Elena: Dad, do you know how to get to town?
Rick: What?
Elena: Do you know how to get to town?
Rick: Um, I guess so.
Elena: Mom- it's a far town. He doesn't know how to get to far town. (shakes her head)
Me: Well, he might know.
Elena: Dad, do you know how to get to far town? Alicia is in far town and she's missing me. She can't drive back here cuz there's fog... and she can't see... she might have to walk.... (trailing off)
Me and Rick: {laughing}
Elena: I will find her myself!
Grant: Yum! I love Owanges!
Elena: Owens?
Grant: No- Owanges!
Elena: You can say Owen and Oranges!
Grant: Yep!
Elena: Mom, look! I want that baby!
Me: You already have lots of babies!
Elena: I want to go to a garage sale and get a new one!
Me: You don't need any more babies.
Elena: Mom, I have a plan!
Me: You do?
Elena: Yes! When I get big, I'm gonna be a Mama and put a baby in my tummy and then I will make her be boringed (born).
Elena got in bed with me overnight because she was cold, but when I woke up she was gone.
Me: Sissy, why did you go back to your own bed last night?
Elena: Mom, you were breavin' in my face and going (insert snoring sounds)
Me: What?!?! I don't snore!
Elena: Ya huh Mom! And your breaf stinks!
(Oh, the love)
